During Science last term, Year 3 explored the weird and wonderful behaviour of heat, light, and electricity. We conducted a few interesting experiments:
Heat
Popcorn is a wonder! We began the term by making some. Who would have thought that adding heat to a dried bit of corn would produce a yummy treat. Year 3 discovered that heat makes things expand (and sometimes explode). We learned that heat moves from the hotter object to the colder object. It is the reason we can cook marvelous foods in our ovens, stoves, and BBQ.
Light
Later we explored how light moves and reacts. Light can even travel around corners, if you use a mirror. Year 3 enjoyed experimenting with what happens when we block light. We blocked sunlight with our hands to create shadow puppets.
Electricity
Did you know a balloon and hair can make electricity? In Year 3 we rubbed a balloon on our hair to create static electricity, and that wasn’t even the coolest part. We cut out some small paper towel drawings. When we moved the charged up balloon toward the paper towel drawings, they danced. We don’t have to look far to see the effects of electricity today. Year 3 were amazed just how many things use electricity, and how much we rely on it.
I was personally struck by just how much we NEED light. Many objects that are hot emit some form of light. Who knows where we would be without the sun shining on us each day and a light in our house each night. In the same way that we need light, we need Jesus. Actually, we need Him more.
I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

Jesus illuminates the brokenness in our lives. Jesus shows us that He is the only solution to the problem of sin. Jesus reveals God to us so that we can live in deep friendship with Him forever.
As we enjoy the light and warmth of another day, as we flick on a light when dusk begins, as we admire the vast array of stars in our night sky, may we give thanks to Jesus, for being the light of our world.
