Friday 17 May
2:30 – 3:20 PM
Reading is a foundational skill for all learning, and getting it right from the beginning is a core focus of our learning programs at Kuyper. Research shows that parents also play a significant role in developing their children’s literacy skills, so parent partnership in this area is important in assisting children in reaching their full potential.
This short parent information session, conducted by our Head of Primary and Director of Teacher Development, Mrs Kaelene McCaull, aims to help parents understand the how and what of helping their child grow into a confident and competent reader.
Kae has been teaching for over 18 years and was a participant in the Literacy and Numeracy Action Plan (LNAP) between 2017 and 2022, both as a classroom teacher and an instructional coach. She continues her instructional role this year as our Director of Teacher Development and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the topic of literacy.
The session will cover:
- What is happening in our classrooms to develop literacy.
- Effective teaching practices in the area of reading and why they are important.
- Strategies for parents to use to support their child’s literacy development at home, e.g. skills for reading with your child, what books to choose, how often to read, and how to help them when they get stuck.
Growing Great Readers is suitable for all parents of children learning to read or developing independence as readers. Parents of students in Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to attend. Supervision for young children will be available.
Commencing at 2:30 PM in the Library.
